Located in the US pre-clearance area, the Servisair Rocky Mountain Lounge at Calgary airport serves exclusively passengers departing for the US. This independent lounge, operated by global airport services provider Servisair, also happens to be the only club in the pre-clearance zone. And since none of the airlines flying out of Calgary to the US offers lounge access, the Rocky Mountain Lounge welcomes customers solely on a pay-in basis. Members of lounge access programs such as Priority Pass are also welcome.
Servisair Rocky Mountain Lounge YYC design
With a grey carpet, plain white walls, wooden partitions and beige and grey furniture, the Servisair Rocky Mountain Lounge at Calgary airport isn’t exactly a hallmark of trendy design. But the club is genuinely charming, with a double sided gas fireplace as the centerpiece, and an elegant buffet area decked out in dark wood.
The Servisair Rocky Mountain Lounge is surprisingly spacious for a relatively small airport. The seating arrangement is sparse, giving customers plenty of privacy and space to stretch out. Pick a seat by the fireplace for a warm and cozy ambiance, or perhaps settle in the hallway behind the buffet for an even more secluded environment. There’s also a back room at the end of the hallway which might be even quieter.
Just don’t hope for a view or for plane spotting opportunities – while the windows let a fair amount of daylight in, the lounge faces another building. The hallway and backroom tend to be pretty dim.
Power outlets are available along the walls, though not at every seat. On a typical day, with relatively few patrons, plugging in should not be a challenge.
Servisair Rocky Mountain Lounge YYC amenities
The food and beverage offering is strong for a contract lounge serving transborder flights. The selection is somewhat eclectic, with individual cereal boxes next to potato chips, but there’s something for everyone, including soups, cereal bars, and mini-sandwiches. The self-serve drink selection includes soda (in full cans, not from a fountain), beer and wine, and an assortment of liquor. We appreciate the small refined touches such as San Pelegrino water in glass bottles, and lemons and limes.
In the back room at the end of the hallway is a small business center with a couple of large work desks and computers, as well as a printer. While Servisair doesn’t offer a dedicated Wi-Fi access point, Wi-Fi at Calgary airport is complimentary and unlimited.
A selection of newspapers and magazines (for use exclusively within the lounge) is also available.
Service at the Servisair Rocky Mountain Lounge is a simple affair, with one or two employees multi-tasking to man the reception desk, collect service items, and replenish the buffet. While often busy, the staff is extremely cordial.
Servisair Rocky Mountain Lounge YYC bottom line
The Servisair Rocky Mountain Lounge at Calgary airport exudes old-fashioned charm and is a quiet and comfortable place to grab a bite, relax or catch up on work ahead of a flight to the US. Since no airline provides complimentary access, the club typically sees limited traffic, and offers a comfortable amount of privacy and personal space. The food and beverage offering are pretty strong for a contract lounge at a relatively minor airport.
The value of a day pass is difficult to assess and comes down to personal needs. The airport offers complimentary Wi-Fi. On the other hand, the terminal falls short of offering any comfortable seating. Another factor to consider is the duration of your stay: officially, access to the US pre-clearance area is only possible within two hours of your scheduled flight time. Connecting passengers who have a long layover may be able to negotiate earlier access, though the decision to let passengers through is solely at the discretion of immigration officers. If you have access through Priority Pass or Diners Club, though, the Rocky Mountain Lounge is an enjoyable haven.
- The peaceful and quiet environment.
- The food and drink selection.
- The lack of views and limited daylight.
- The lack of power outlets in the main seating area.
