Overall ratings
This is a pretty lame excuse for a lounge that happens to serve as the international departure point for the world’s largest airlines – in its headquarters city!
Yes, they have a lot of space and free newspapers and (welcome) showers. As to food, the freebies side pretty much boils down to pretzels and carrot sticks. Everything else you have to pay for, which is unheard of in European, Far East and South American lounges I have visited.
Oh, they recently started dishing out guacamole in the afternoons. Thanks, American.
Likewise, foreign lounges don’t charge for drinks. It’s usually self serve, but if you want a drink at the Madrid airport lounge, you just pour it. Wine, Jerez, you name it. DFW gives you a ticket for one free drink. Thanks, American.
Maybe some AA execs should hop on a plane and visit lounges in headquarters cities of OneWorld partners, such as BA at LHR or Qatar in Doha. They’ll come away humbled.
