Portland airport may have a provincial vibe, but it boasts no less than three airline lounges operated by Alaska, Delta, and United. Located in Concourse E above gate E1, the United Club is an intimate retreat for United and Air Canada passengers.
United Club PDX design
Just like the city of Portland, the United Club at Portland airport feels like a time capsule, but has a unique character.
With wood panels and light globes, the aesthetics of the space have hardly changed since the 80s. But the eye is drawn to the panoramic vistas: with three window walls, the United Club affords prime views of the airport grounds and hills in the distance. It’s also exceptionally close to the runway, and thus an excellent vantage point over airliner movements.
Recently refreshed, the furniture caters to the modern traveler with individual side tables and lamps, and power and USB ports at every seat. The compact layout isn’t especially attractive, but it is space efficient and the lounge rarely sees major crowds (though it does fill up occasionally.)
Regular United Club users will note that the Portland location lacks a few traditional features: due to the limited real estate, United’s signature egg chairs are missing and counter-style work spaces are missing. The dining area functions well as a work zone, save for the lack of power outlets.
United Club PDX amenities
The United Club at Portland airport offers a set of essential amenities geared at domestic travelers.
The buffet spread is typical of most United Clubs. While by no means impressive, the selection is generous for a club that primarily caters to regional travelers. In the morning, patrons will find pastries, fresh fruit, yoghurt and granola, cereal, and rotating hot items such as oatmeal. The club serves Illy espresso, as well as an assortment of teas.
Throughout the day, the selection includes snacks, soups, salads, and sweets such as brownies and cookies—enough for a light meal.
In accordance with Oregon law, the bar serves only beer and wine. House wines and Prosecco are complimentary, while premium wines come at a nominal charge. A vast assortment of soft drinks is also available.
The club features a dedicated Wi-Fi access point with complimentary access to Foli, an online library of newspapers and magazines.
United Club PDX bottom line
It’s notable that United operates a club at Portland airport, a relatively minor destination within the airline’s global network.
Physically, the small and dated space fails to impress. Yet, the lounge punches above its weight for a regional airport with unparalleled views, genuinely friendly and attentive staff, and a substantial snack selection.
The United Club is expected to move in the future as the airport undergoes a modernization program which will involve the relocation of all airlines.
- The runway views.
- The plethora of power outlets.
- The dated décor.
- The limited alcoholic beverage selection (in accordance with local laws.)

Closes at 7:30 p.m.? Really United?
The view is unbeatable, the lounge oversees the United gates and it is very close to the runway. Staff are friendly and the furnishings don’t look dated. However, I find it well below star alliance lounges across Europe. The food selection is quite limited, with soup as only option for hot food and only cheese and very little salad variety.
