At New York City’s JFK airport, Delta’s massive operations spread across Terminals 2 and 4. The sprawling Terminal 4 is the primary gateway for domestic and international flights and the home of the airline’s flagship Sky Club. The more intimate 11-gate Terminal 2 serves passengers departing on regional flights, and features a second Sky Club lounge.
Delta is planning to consolidate operations at an expanded Terminal 4, which will spell the demise of the current Terminal 2 (the facility will be demolished and the space repurposed for Terminal 1 expansions.) The project should materialize around 2023, barring any delays.
At this time, the two terminals remain in operation and are linked through an airside shuttle, so passengers may use either lounge. Terminal 2 may not be glamorous, but its compact footprint makes travel a breeze. Guests will find the Delta Sky Club immediately after security, on the upper level. The lounge welcomes members, as well as Delta One passengers and premium customers traveling on SkyTeam partners.
Delta Sky Club JFK design
The venerable Delta Sky Club at New York JFK airport Terminal 2 won’t earn any design awards—the space has the utilitarian charm of an office from the 80s—though the carpet and furniture are immaculate, and the bar area sports Delta’s signature corporate design, with bold red and blue accents.
The Sky Club was built before the advent of open floor plans. Whether that’s a plus or a minus is a matter of perspective. The partitioned layout minimizes noise and increases privacy, but on the flip side, the center section receives virtually no daylight.
The lobby opens onto a large seating area with traditional lounge seats facing each other. Immediately adjacent is a dining area flanked by a bright bar zone. Then, there’s a succession of spaces outfitted with a variety of seats including Delta’s signature highly-private cube chairs, dining tables, and groups of seats around coffee tables.
Most guests tend to congregate in the seating and dining area near the lobby, so it’s worth walking around to find a quieter spot. The most secluded section is the L-shaped mezzanine in the rear of the lounge. While noise from the terminal invariably bleeds in, the mezzanine benefits from additional daylight and features limited tarmac views.
Art evoking New York City dots the lounge. Worth noting are the pieces inspired by the subway, in the mezzanine area. Less exciting is the lack of power outlets. Unlike most Delta Sky Clubs, the JFK Terminal 2 location was not retrofitted with power at every seat. The few outlets are located along the walls.
Delta Sky Club JFK amenities
While JFK airport’s terminal 2 primarily serves regional flights, the Sky Club still boasts a full line-up of amenities.
The buffet features the typical Sky Club fare, including a selection of snacks, salads, soups, and sweets. Delta also offer hot options around meal times, including eggs and sausage for breakfast. The spread isn’t as expansive as at the flagship Terminal 4 Sky Club, namely due to limited real estate, but with a variety of healthy options as well as comfort food, most patrons should find something that fits their taste.
Drinks wise, guests can help themselves to infused water, soft drinks, and tea, or craft their own espresso drink and choose from an assortment of syrups. Complimentary beer, wine, and well drinks are available at the bar, along with an extensive range of premium cocktails for purchase.
Two shower suites are available. Inquire at the dedicated desk as there may be a waitlist. The shower rooms are equipped with a toilet, sink, shower, and Malin+Goetz bath amenities in wall-mounted dispensers.
Other amenities include a business center with a printer/fax/copier, fast Wi-Fi, and a selection of newspapers and magazines.
Delta Sky Club JFK bottom line
Design wise, the utilitarian Delta Sky Club at New York’s Kennedy airport Terminal 2 may feel like the stepchild of the trendy Terminal 4 flagship club, but there is still much to love about this underrated facility.
Ideally situated, steps beyond the security checkpoint and a stone’s throw away from the gates, the Delta Sky Club at JFK T2 is surprisingly spacious for an 11-gate terminal, and is typically quieter than the bustling Terminal 4 club. And save for the outdoor Sky Deck, the line-up of amenities is substantially the same. Guests will find a selection of snacks, salads and sweets, shower suites, and a business center.
The Sky Club at Terminal 2 is unlikely to be remodeled as Delta is planning on consolidating operations at Terminal 4 in a few years. The airline is planning to open a second lounge in Terminal 4 to relieve the main club.
