Ah, Dulles. The “mobile lounges” (a.k.a. the people movers from the 1960s) that still connect multiple portions of the airport despite the new inter-terminal transit system, might one day be retired. And United’s “temporary” – after 20 years – concourses might one day be demolished. Might. While Washington is a United hub, it probably has the worst facilities of any airport served by the airline, and the lounges fall in line with the traveler’s low expectations.

United operates three United Clubs in the dilapidated C and D concourses, in addition to an excellent Polaris Lounge. The United Club in Concourse D near gate D8 is located below the concourse, so save for a few tiny windows across the bar area, there is no natural light. The place feels pretty dreadful with dim and sad lights that cast yellow hues on the tired furniture.
Immediately upon entering, at the bottom of the stairs, is a dining area, which is flanked by a seating area. A bar is located in the back. Admittedly the club is a haven for early morning flights when it’s empty and silent and provides an escape from the terminal itself. However, it becomes crowded early in the day, which adds to the depressing vibe.

United Club IAD amenities
The amenities of the club are in line with what offers at domestic United Clubs. A buffet offers a breakfast spread, followed by snacks, soups and salads throughout the day. The selection is sufficient for a substantial snack but is no substitute for a meal. House wines and well drinks are complimentary, while premium drinks may be purchased.
The bathroom is small and tired and there are no showers.
United Club IAD bottom line
The United Club at Washington Dulles Concourse D by gate D8 is United’s poorest club. Perhaps the good news is that once you’ve experienced this dreadful lounge, everything else will shine in comparison (except other United Clubs in Dulles, perhaps.) If you hold Star Alliance Gold status and have sufficient time to make the trek to Concourse B, consider visiting the Lufthansa Business Lounge or Senator Lounge for a superior experience. Alternatively the United Club at C17 is slightly nicer.
- It might be better than waiting in the terminal, maybe?
- The lack of natural light compounded by the dim lighting.
- The worn furniture.
- The crowds.
- The lack of power outlets.
- The small bathroom.

- United Polaris business class passengers departing or connecting (no guests)
- United Business passengers departing on a United transcontinental Premium Service flight at the origin and destination of their premium transcontinental flight (no guests)
- United Business passengers departing on an United international flight (to/from Mexico, Guam, Caribbean, Central America, Columbia and Ecuador) at departure, connecting and arrival airports (no guests)
- Business Class passengers departing on an intercontinental flight operated by a Star Alliance carrier (no guests)
- First Class passengers departing on an intercontinental flight operated by a Star Alliance carrier (+1 guest)
- United Premier Gold, Premium Platinum, Premier 1K, and Global Services members departing on an intercontinental flight operated by a Star Alliance carrier in any class of service (+1 guest)
- Star Alliance Gold Members (except United Premier members and above) departing on a domestic or international flight operated by a Star Alliance carrier in any class of service (+1 guest)
- United Club one-time pass holders (subject to capacity restrictions) (no guests)
- Active U.S. military personnel departing on a same day United flight (+family members)
- Air Canada Maple Leaf Club members departing on a flight operated by a Star Alliance carrier (no guests for Air Canada Maple Leaf Club North America members, +1 guest for Air Canada Maple Leaf Club Worldwide members)
Notes:
- Passengers in domestic First class do not receive United Club access. United Business passengers flying on a Premium Service flight between San Francisco/Boston, San Francisco/Newark, or Los Angeles/Newark receive access at the origin and destination of their premium transcontinental flight.
- A government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license, passport or military ID) may be required.

Terrible, dark and depressing lounge. Only worthy of a star because of the customer service super agents behind the counter. Frankly, I’m willing to walk all the way to another terminal to find another lounge.
100% disagree. They may have updated since last review. It’s just as good as the other lounges and your ramp level for some views of the aircraft. Large area if you move to the back. Same food and drinks.
This is year in and year out the worst lounge I visit on a regular basis. Everything is very worn and the crowds are incredible. Last week, there literally was no seat in the club. Being a United 1k member I find it quite unacceptable. Other Star Alliance Gold members must be stunned when they reach this United Lounge as compared to other worldwide Star Alliance Lounges. The only pity is that at Dulles you really have no other options outside of the lounge so you are stuck.
We feel that this lounge is the definition of one-star 🙂
